The Horrors of the Auto-Correct

I enjoy chatting. It's a great way to communicate with people. Now, I must admit, I'm rather addicted to Yahoo Messenger chat. Throughout all my chatting history, and boy do I have one, I have concluded that Messenger is the best. Between the live emoticons and the "BUZZ" effect, I'm definitely caught, hook, line, and sinker. However, you must be thinking now that the direction of this post is not matching up with the title....and you are right.

Now we come to the meat of the matter. I am personally debating with myself whether I am a fan of the concept of "Auto-correct." Now I know what you're thinking. "Amy, this is quite an unnecessary concern to contemplate." Oh, but it is quite unnecessary! Therefore, let us enjoy discussing something purely for the joy of discussing it!

How does it make you feel? Are we that spelling-challenged to need an automatic dictionary aid for texting? (Technically, I am that spelling-challenged....) This whole idea rather struck me in the forehead like Goliath must have felt when he was targeted by David's stone. It was sudden and striking (pun definitely intended).

The good side of Auto-Correct is definitely obvious. For the average human, texting can be preformed much more time efficiently when using a device with Auto-Correct. Although useful, is it merely a crutch for slothful behavior?

Here's the preface: Amanda (my younger sister) and I were chattin' it up on Messenger...even though we were in the same room.....concerning, I know, but that is the truth. She was using my phone which has the program that I now speak of: Auto-Correct. Our chats never communicate anything of interest. They are 98% of the time complete gibberish, but that is what makes it fun. I think it best to copy and paste some of this said conversation as to clearly illustrate my point. My apologies in advance for the extreme randomness.

Me: "Okay, I'm going to go blog now."

Amanda: "BLOG???'

Me: "Cheya"

Amanda: "Ach!!! Okay."

Me: "blog. I have a blog. And I blog on my blog"

Amanda: "Cheya?? Was dat? Inhibit."

Me: "Inhibit?"

Amanda: "What?! Auto check"

Me: "what"

Amanda: "Khufu"

Me: "yikes"

Amanda: "Khufu. Ohhjhhj. There."

So, there it is. Apparently, she was trying to say "Ohhh," but it was auto-corrected to the words "Khufu" and "Inhibit." I find this amusing. But observe the horror, my friends! She had no intention of saying those words, and yet, those words and not a innocent "Ohhh" were sent to my computer! Shocking!! Should a program have such control?? This is the unsolved mystery.

So, to wrap up this very random post, consider the motives behind the installment of Auto-correct....or not, because this whole post is quite silly anywho ;-)

Title, Time, and Thoughts

Good afternoon! What a beautiful day it is today!

Well, firstly (...and Andrew Pudewa says not to use that word...oh well...), I should take care of some business. I changed the title! Hurrah! Shocking, I know, but I needed something fresh and more Amy-ish. So, this blog will now be referred to as "Amy's Scribbles." Exciting! (yes, I am easily excited).

As to what has been happening in Amy-world, my sister, Ally, and my niece, Emma, are here for a visit! (My apologies for all those commas). I am so excited that they are here!! It has been quite wonderful so far :) They arrived last Saturday, and they will be flying home on Tuesday. It has gone by too quickly. Emma is growing up so fast; I can hardly believe my eyes.

You know that sense of awe? The one you get when you realize how big God is, and how small we are. And yet, His great love for us. That sense of awe. I was filled with this awe the other day in the car with Emma. I just sat there next to her. She was sitting there looking up at me with those beautiful, brown eyes while playing with my hands. God is so great and mighty, and yet, He loves us so much that He knits us together cell by cell. My mind is in danger of exploding when I even try to grasp the biological complexity of life.

I am ashamed to admit that I often just go through my daily life without stopping and looking at the sky. The sky, or the trees, or the water that runs down my sink when I'm brushing my teeth. And I don't mean to just see these things, but to really look.

I hope to encourage you. When you are done reading this post, go outside and look. Go look, ponder, and wonder. Let us always strive for being in awe.

Man + Cat + High five = Awesome

uh, yeah. I think this is pretty fantastic. My only question at this point is what are they both so excited about? haha

The Chemistry Saga Continues......

Oh! Pure Joy! My Chemistry 2C midterm has been slayed! Well, to speak the truth, I didn't quite slay it. It was a nightmare! However, I am slowly learning to leave the results of all tests in God's hands. And so, long story short, although the test went poorly, I'm not really worrying about it. Well, that's all I got today...haha. The creative juices are running a little low today ;-) ttyl

Linguistics

So, I must admit that I was pretty excited to come back and blog today! I like the idea of going somewhere and filling blank space. Currently, I am waiting for my Linguistics class to start. Linguistics: [ling-gwis-tiks] (n.) the science of language, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and historical linguistics. I find this definition somewhat hilarious because, unless you know linguistic vocabulary, this definition wouldn't help in the slightest. Essentially, linguistics is the study of language, how it's created, and how it's used. Last lecture we watched the an interesting movie called "The Linguistics." (surprising, no?) It was fascinating! The main idea was these two linguists by profession traveled the world in search of endangered languages. A fact: on average, every two weeks a language dies. I would have never believed it to be so frequent! The two linguists traveled to Siberia, India, and Bolivia and studied three dying languages that were once used in that region. Using a series of gestures, they asked speakers of the language to say what body parts, colors, and numbers were in their language. With thorough note taking and vocal recording, they successfully documented some valuable information about each language. Throughout the video, many reasons for a language becoming endangered were mentioned. A simple, yet highly practiced way of losing a language is the use of boarding schools. They combine children from a vast expanse of land to one location and the children end up using one language at the school instead of their own dialect. Now, I must mention my opinions on the subject. Although it is sad to be losing once used languages of the world, I think it important to look at the bigger picture. This particular school they showed was in India. It cannot be stressed enough how important an education is in this day and age especially for children in third-world countries. If they are unskilled and cannot provide for themselves, they are in danger of being sold into slavery for a source of income. So, in the complete view of things, boarding schools are extremely important in preserving a child's future in safety. I love languages. I think the study of language is almost as fun as biology. However, when it comes down to it, I think that keeping children out of slavery is more important than preserving their village's dialect. Anyway, there's some food for thought. I think it's very important to think this matters through and remind ourselves of what's most important.

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog! I, spadoodles, will be your faithful (that's the plan) author and contributor from here on out. I realize that I am sending this post into the vast expanse of cyberspace with the chance of a human stumbling upon it to be at a minimum, but alas, here I am. I find journaling my daily thoughts to be a fun way of seeing where God has brought me throughout the years. Let me tell you a little about myself to start this blog off in the proper way. (I think it necessary to know at least a few details about the life of a blogger you choose to peer in upon).

First and foremost, I am a follower of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. HE died for me; I live for HIM. I will forever be grateful for HIS unending love and HIS constant molding me into the person HE wants me to be.

Next, my amazing family. God has blessed me with the most incredible family. Always loving, supportive, and encouraging, I don't know how I would exist without them.

Currently, I am a student at the University of California, Davis as an undeclared biological sciences major. Ever since the 8th grade, I have been fascinated with God's creation and how science endeavors to explain it. One of my many dreams is to further my studies in biology and eventually perform medical research to help those in need.

So, there you have it: A short narrative of myself.

I think it also important to explain the name of my blog. "Enlarged to Show Texture" was the name of a blog that my older sister and I shared some time ago. It was a joy to be a part of that blog with her, and I wanted to continue under the same name.

Lastly, if you are reading this, please comment :) I always love feedback.
